✍️ How to Write a Essay
An essay develops a single argument (thesis) through structured paragraphs: an introduction that states the claim, body paragraphs that each advance one point with evidence, and a conclusion that shows why the argument matters. The classic academic essay runs 500–2,500 words and is graded on argument quality, evidence use and organization — not length.

Quick answer
An essay develops a single argument (thesis) through structured paragraphs: an introduction that states the claim, body paragraphs that each advance one point with evidence, and a conclusion that shows why the argument matters. Plan for 500–2,500 words (standard 5-paragraph to 8 pages), format in MLA 9 (humanities), APA 7 (social sciences), and budget 4–10 hours depending on research depth. The full structure and checklist are below — both free.

How long a essay takes — realistically
The honest budget for a essay is 4–10 hours depending on research depth, which places it among the moderate assignments in an undergraduate term. Length expectations run 500–2,500 words (standard 5-paragraph to 8 pages), and citation formatting follows MLA 9 (humanities), APA 7 (social sciences).
Time pressure distorts strategy more than quality does. Students given 20 hours spread across three weeks routinely outperform students given the same 20 hours in one weekend — not because the weekend writer is worse, but because revision cycles need sleep between them. If your window is compressed, cut scope (fewer sources, narrower question) rather than skipping revision.
Essay structure, section by section
The skeleton below is what graders check first, often with the rubric open. Each part lists what belongs in it — and, implicitly, what loses points.
- Title: Descriptive and specific — 'Not Just a Game: How Title IX Changed Women's College Athletics' beats 'Essay 2'.
- Introduction (10%): Hook, context, then a one-sentence thesis that states your actual claim, not just your topic.
- Body paragraphs (75%): One point per paragraph: claim sentence, evidence (quote/data/example), analysis that links back to the thesis.
- Conclusion (10%): Restate the argument in fresh words, then answer 'so what?' — implications, limits or next questions.
- Works Cited / References: Every in-text citation appears here in MLA 9 or APA 7 format, alphabetized.
Build it in this order: draft the body sections first, then the introduction, then the abstract or summary last. Introductions written before the body exist almost always argue something the body never quite delivers.
Where essays appear across majors
Essays are not confined to one department. The majors below assign them most often, each with a discipline-specific twist on the same skeleton:
- Nursing — uses essays for reflective essays document clinical rotations using gibbs or
- Business Administration — uses essays for ethics and organizational-behavior essays ask for argument b
- Psychology — uses essays for theory-comparison essays ask students to argue between behav
- Education — uses essays for philosophy-of-education statements are required for licensur
- Economics — uses essays for theory essays compare models and their assumptions under rea
- English Literature — uses essays for the analytical essay is the genre — thesis, textual evidence
Same genre, different accents: a nursing case study follows NANDA-I headings while a business case runs SWOT — but both grade evidence-per-claim the same way. Our subject pages show each discipline's variant.
Pre-submission checklist for a essay
Run this list after drafting, before formatting. Every item maps to a rubric line someone, somewhere, has lost points on:
- Thesis states a claim someone could disagree with
- Each body paragraph opens with its own mini-claim
- Every quote is followed by 2–3 sentences of your analysis
- Transitions connect paragraphs logically, not just sequentially
- Introduction ends with the thesis; conclusion adds meaning
- Citations match the Works Cited page one-to-one
- Word count is within 10% of the requirement
The checklist works because it forces a mode switch: drafting mode produces sentences, checklist mode judges them. Trying to do both simultaneously is why "I proofread it" rarely survives contact with a rubric.

How the essay changes across majors
Ask three instructors what an essay is and you will get three different documents. In an English literature course, the essay is an act of close reading: a 1,200-word argument about how one image in a sonnet carries the poem's meaning, quoted line by line and documented in MLA 9 with parenthetical line numbers. The evidence is the text itself, and outside research is often forbidden. A nursing essay looks nothing like that. It is typically reflective — 'describe a clinical moment and what it taught you' — written in APA 7, and frequently scored against Gibbs's reflective cycle, which demands description, feelings, evaluation and an action plan in that order. First person is required there, not banned.
Business departments morph the genre again, usually into an executive memo wearing essay clothes: claim in the first two sentences, headings like Recommendation and Risks, and a length that shrinks when the answer is clear, because brevity is graded as competence. The fastest way to identify which essay you have been assigned is to read the verb in the prompt. 'Analyze the passage' signals literature rules; 'reflect on your experience' signals nursing rules; 'recommend' signals memo rules. Misreading that verb is, in my grading experience, the top reason a technically well-written essay still loses a letter grade. Each subject guide on this site breaks down the full discipline variant, citation quirks included.

Frequently asked questions
3 answered1How long should a college essay paragraph be?
Aim for 100–200 words: long enough to make one point with evidence and analysis, short enough that a reader never loses the thread. If a paragraph runs past 250 words, look for a second idea hiding inside it that deserves its own paragraph.
2Can I use 'I' in an academic essay?
It depends on the discipline. Reflective and personal essays welcome first person. In analytical papers, most instructors accept 'I argue that...' but discourage 'I think maybe...'. Check your course rubric — and when unsure, make the claim itself the subject of the sentence.
3What makes a thesis statement strong?
A strong thesis is specific, arguable and roadmap-worthy. 'Social media is bad' is a topic. 'Instagram's 2019 like-count experiment increased users' comparison anxiety, which reversed once users could hide counts' is a claim with evidence behind it — and a structure your essay can follow.
