📚 How to Write a Literature Review
A literature review synthesizes existing scholarship on a question to establish what is known, debated and unknown. It is organized by themes and debates — never a source-by-source book report. As a standalone paper (3,000–8,000 words) or a thesis chapter, it proves the research gap your own work fills.

Quick answer
A literature review synthesizes existing scholarship on a question to establish what is known, debated and unknown. Plan for 3,000–8,000 words standalone; 20–50 pages in a thesis, format in APA 7 (sciences/social sciences), MLA 9 (humanities), and budget 15–40 hours including searching. The full structure and checklist are below — both free.

How long a literature review takes — realistically
The honest budget for a literature review is 15–40 hours including searching, which places it among the heavy assignments in an undergraduate term. Length expectations run 3,000–8,000 words standalone; 20–50 pages in a thesis, and citation formatting follows APA 7 (sciences/social sciences), MLA 9 (humanities).
Time pressure distorts strategy more than quality does. Students given 20 hours spread across three weeks routinely outperform students given the same 20 hours in one weekend — not because the weekend writer is worse, but because revision cycles need sleep between them. If your window is compressed, cut scope (fewer sources, narrower question) rather than skipping revision.
Literature Review structure, section by section
The skeleton below is what graders check first, often with the rubric open. Each part lists what belongs in it — and, implicitly, what loses points.
- Scope statement: Define the question, inclusion criteria (years, study types) and databases searched.
- Thematic organization: Group studies by theme, method or debate — the outline IS the review's skeleton.
- Synthesis paragraphs: Compare studies within each theme: agreements, contradictions, method differences.
- Critique: Evaluate methodological quality; a review that only summarizes fails.
- Gap statement: Conclude with what remains unanswered — the justification for new research.
- Reference matrix: A synthesis table mapping authors × findings × methods makes patterns visible.
Build it in this order: draft the body sections first, then the introduction, then the abstract or summary last. Introductions written before the body exist almost always argue something the body never quite delivers.
Where literature reviews appear across majors
Literature Reviews are not confined to one department. The majors below assign them most often, each with a discipline-specific twist on the same skeleton:
- Psychology — uses literature reviews for systematic-style literature reviews teach students to synthe
- Biology & Life Sciences — uses literature reviews for systematic reviews of a gene, disease or process teach synth
- English Literature — uses literature reviews for survey courses teach the difference between reviewing critic
- History — uses literature reviews for historiographical essays map how interpretations of one even
- Sociology — uses literature reviews for courses teach synthesis of empirical studies on one social q
- Political Science — uses literature reviews for methods courses assign reviews that map a debate — civil war
Same genre, different accents: a nursing case study follows NANDA-I headings while a business case runs SWOT — but both grade evidence-per-claim the same way. Our subject pages show each discipline's variant.
Pre-submission checklist for a literature review
Run this list after drafting, before formatting. Every item maps to a rubric line someone, somewhere, has lost points on:
- Organized by themes, not by individual source
- Databases and search terms documented
- Both classic and recent (5-year) sources included
- Contradictions between studies analyzed, not ignored
- Methodological quality critiqued
- Ends with an explicit gap or future-research statement
- Synthesis table (author × finding × method) built
The checklist works because it forces a mode switch: drafting mode produces sentences, checklist mode judges them. Trying to do both simultaneously is why "I proofread it" rarely survives contact with a rubric.

How the literature review changes across majors
Every major assigns literature reviews, and every major means something different by the term. In psychology, a review is a synthesis organized by theme or debate — never study-by-study — written in APA 7 and built on a synthesis matrix that forces comparison across methods and samples; a 10-page empirical review typically covers 20 to 40 sources. Nursing raises the evidentiary bar: course reviews often require PRISMA-style screening documentation, an evidence table with columns for design, sample and outcome measures, and a hierarchy-of-evidence argument for why randomized trials outweigh cohort studies.
History's version is the historiography: not 'what does the literature say' but 'how has the interpretation changed' — an argument about arguments, footnoted in Chicago. The failure mode I see constantly, in all three fields, is the annotated-list review: one paragraph per source with no connective claims, which caps at a C because synthesis is the graded skill. A quick self-test: if your draft could survive having its citations shuffled, it is not yet a review. Source recency rules also differ by field, with nursing expecting most sources inside five years and history welcoming fifty-year-old monographs. The subject guides on this site walk through each discipline's variant, including source counts and recency expectations.

Frequently asked questions
3 answered1How is a literature review different from an annotated bibliography?
An annotated bibliography lists sources one by one with summaries — a stocktake. A literature review organizes sources into an argument about the state of knowledge — a conversation. The review's paragraphs compare multiple sources against each other; the bibliography's entries never talk to each other.
2How many sources should a literature review include?
For a 10-page course review, 20–40 sources is typical; a dissertation chapter runs 100+. What instructors check is saturation: have you covered the major studies and the last five years? Twenty well-chosen, genuinely synthesized sources beat sixty listed without engagement.
3How do I organize 40 sources without drowning?
Build a synthesis matrix first: rows for sources, columns for theme, method, sample, findings and limitations. Patterns appear visually — three studies agree, two contradict. Your paragraph structure then writes itself from the columns, and contradictions become your critique section.
