What Does Double-Spaced Mean in an Essay?
Double spacing is the first formatting instruction most students receive and the first one they get quietly wrong, because word processors open with tighter defaults than instructors expect. This page covers exactly what the setting does, where to find it in Word and Google Docs, why it exists at all, and the places where double spacing applies that students routinely miss. One menu setting sits between a compliant paper and an automatic deduction.

Quick answer
Double-spaced means every line of text sits with one full blank line beneath it, set as line spacing 2.0 in your word processor. It yields about 250 words per page in 12-point font, and instructors require it because the white space leaves room for comments and makes reading faster.

The mechanics of the setting
Line spacing controls the vertical gap between every line inside a paragraph. Double spacing multiplies the single-line height by two, producing one full blank line under each line of text, and it applies automatically to every new line you type. It is different from paragraph spacing, which adds gaps between paragraphs only; the over-spaced documents graders complain about have both switched on at once.
In Microsoft Word, select the text, open the Home tab, click the line-and-paragraph-spacing icon, and choose 2.0, or open the Paragraph dialog and set Line spacing to Double while setting 'space after' to 0 pt. In Google Docs the path is Format, then Line and paragraph spacing, then Double. Set it before you write instead of after: selecting the finished document also reformats the half-empty first lines of every paragraph, and what fit on five pages at 1.08 will need eight at true double.
The numbers at a glance
Spacing settings and what they produce — the range, and where each row actually shows up in coursework. Skim it first; the sections below explain why the range exists and which row applies to you.
| Spacing | Words per page (12 pt) | Where it is standard |
|---|---|---|
| Double (2.0) | 250 | APA 7, MLA 9, Chicago manuscripts, most essays |
| 1.5 | 375 | Some business and education formats |
| Single (1.0) | 500 | Memos, lab reports, annotated bibliographies in some courses |
| Word default (1.08) | 460 | Nothing academic; change it before submitting |
| Double + spacing after paragraph | 225-235 | Over-spaced; turn off 'add space after paragraph' |
Why instructors demand it
The requirement exists for handwriting, literally: grading happens in the gaps. A double-spaced page gives a grader room between lines for margin notes, revision suggestions, and checkmarks, which is why the convention predates word processors and survives every software change. It also raises reading speed and lowers skip-line errors, which matters across a stack of sixty papers.
The second reason is length honesty. Double spacing normalizes page counts into a comparable measure, so 'write 5 pages' means roughly 1,250 words for every student in the room regardless of font taste. When a submission arrives single-spaced at five pages, it carries twice the assigned word count, and the instructor cannot tell whether the overshoot is ambition or evasion without counting words manually, which is exactly the friction the rule exists to prevent.
The places double spacing applies that students miss
APA 7 double-spaces the entire manuscript: title page, abstract, block quotes, table bodies, and reference list alike, with no extra half-line between entries. MLA 9 is nearly identical, double-spacing everything including the Works Cited and the four-line heading block on page one. The most common partial-compliance error is double-spacing the body but single-spacing the references, which is visible from the doorway of a lecture hall.
Block quotes are the exception students guess wrong most often, and the answer surprises both ways: in APA 7 and MLA 9, a block quote of 40-plus words is indented half an inch AND remains double-spaced. Only Chicago's Turabian variant allows single-spaced block quotes with a blank line around them. Tables and figures may use single, 1.5, or double spacing in APA 7, whichever keeps them readable, and figure captions follow the body spacing.
The page-count consequences
Double spacing yields about 250 words per page in 12-point Times New Roman, so the standard conversions apply: 500 words is two pages, 1,000 is four, 3,000 is twelve. Font choice shifts the number, with Calibri adding roughly 20-40 words per page and Georgia taking a few away, which is why 'how many pages' questions always carry a word-count answer underneath as the stable truth.
Check the setting the way graders do: view the document at full size and look at the gap between two lines of the same paragraph. If the gap equals roughly one full line height, the spacing is 2.0; if it is a sliver, you are at 1.08 or 1.15 and the page count is lying to you. Ten seconds of inspection before submission beats the automatic deduction, which most rubrics list under formatting compliance and apply without comment.
The format check graders run before reading
Graders check mechanics first and content second — a two-minute scan that decides the paper's first impression. The list: correct font and size, double spacing throughout (no stray single-spaced paragraphs), one-inch margins, page numbers in the right corner, the required title-page fields, heading levels used consistently, and references formatted with hanging indents. Each item is trivial; missing two costs measurable points in most rubrics.
Do this scan on the exported PDF, not the working document — export quirks (shifted margins, dropped page numbers, orphaned headings) only appear there. The style switcher below shows the same source formatted in APA 7, MLA 9 and Chicago side by side, which is the fastest way to catch the format you've been half-remembering from the wrong course.

Frequently asked questions
5 answered1How do I make my essay double-spaced in Word?
Select all text with Ctrl+A, open the Home tab, click the line-spacing icon, and choose 2.0. In the same Paragraph dialog, set spacing after to 0 pt so you do not double-space twice. The change applies to the whole document, including headings and the references page.
2How do I double-space in Google Docs?
Select the text, open Format, choose Line and paragraph spacing, then Double. Alternatively use the line-spacing button in the toolbar. Check 'Add space after paragraph' is off in the same menu, because Docs enables it by default and the combination overshoots the format. The whole document updates at once.
3Does double spacing include the references page?
Yes. APA 7 and MLA 9 both require the entire manuscript double-spaced, reference list included, with no extra blank line between entries. Single-spacing only the references is one of the three most common formatting deductions instructors report. APA 7 and MLA 9 are explicit about it.
4How many words is a double-spaced page?
About 250 words in 12-point Times New Roman or Arial with 1-inch margins, or slightly more with Calibri. Headings, block quotes, and short paragraphs reduce the count, which is why 240-270 is the realistic band rather than a single number. Headings pull the real count down.
5Should block quotes be double-spaced?
Yes in both APA 7 and MLA 9: quotes of 40 or more words are indented half an inch and keep the body's double spacing. Chicago's Turabian variant permits single-spacing with a blank line above and below, so follow whichever style guide your course names.
