How to Cite Multiple Authors in APA 7 (and MLA 9)
Multiple-author citations changed more between APA 6 and APA 7 than any other rule — the 3-5 authors exception vanished, and et al. now starts at three authors from the first citation. The table shows every case in both major styles; the sections cover the 21-author rule, avoiding ambiguous citations, and the et al. punctuation details that cost easy points.

Quick answer
APA 7 rules: two authors — always cite both, (Smith & Jones, 2024). Three or more — first author plus et al. from the very first citation, (Smith et al., 2024). MLA 9 differs: two authors appear as (Smith and Jones 12); three or more use the first author plus et al.

The APA 7 rule that simplified everything
APA 6 made students memorize a three-zone system: two authors both cited, three to five authors all listed at first citation then et al., six or more et al. always. APA 7 collapsed it to two rules — both authors or et al. — effective from the first citation. If your instinct says 'but first citation lists everyone', that is APA 6 muscle memory; the current manual is simpler.
The ampersand rule trips people in prose: inside parentheses use & — (Smith & Jones, 2024) — but in the running text write 'Smith and Jones (2024) argued...' with the word and. MLA 9 never uses the ampersand in-text at all: (Smith and Jones 12), with no comma before the page number. The two styles disagree on punctuation constantly; switching styles mid-paper without re-checking is the most common source of citation drift.
The numbers at a glance
Author counts in-text, style by style — the range, and where each row actually shows up in coursework. Skim it first; the sections below explain why the range exists and which row applies to you.
| Authors | APA 7 in-text | MLA 9 in-text |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | (Smith, 2024) | (Smith 12) |
| 2 | (Smith & Jones, 2024) — both, every time | (Smith and Jones 12) |
| 3+ | (Smith et al., 2024) — from first citation | (Smith et al. 12) |
| 2 groups, same first author | (Smith, 2022; Smith, 2024) | (Smith, Choices 12) |
| Same year, same authors | (Smith & Jones, 2024a) (2024b) | (Smith and Jones, 2024, choices) |
| No author | ("Short Title," 2024) | ("Short Title" 12) |
The 21-author rule and other reference-list cases
In the reference list, APA 7 requires up to 20 authors listed in full. At 21 or more, list the first 19, an ellipsis, and the final author — the manual's acknowledgment that consortium papers now have 200+ contributors. MLA 9 lists up to two authors in the entry, then switches to first-author-et-al for three or more, in the reference list as well as in-text.
Group authors — organizations — count as single authors: (American Psychological Association [APA], 2024) on first use with the bracketed acronym, then (APA, 2024). The abbreviation introduction is optional but saves space when the organization recurs. One subtle case: two different author groups sharing an acronym spell them out every time, because (APA, 2024) is ambiguous if the American Philological Association also appears.
Ambiguity: the rule graders actually check
Citations exist so a reader can locate the exact source. When two in-text citations shorten to the same form — Smith, Chen and Ortiz (2021) and Smith, Rivera and Patel (2021) both become (Smith et al., 2021) — APA 7 requires spelling out as many authors as needed to disambiguate: (Smith, Chen, et al., 2021) and (Smith, Rivera, et al., 2021). The rule applies whenever shortened forms collide, regardless of author count.
Same first author, different years is not ambiguous — years distinguish: (Smith, 2022; Smith, 2024). Same authors, same year gets letters: 2024a, 2024b, assigned by the reference list's alphabetical order of titles. Graders spot ambiguous citations because they make double-checking impossible; disambiguation is five minutes of editing and the difference between a clean reference audit and a forced revision.
et al. mechanics: punctuation, verbs, and voice
The punctuation is 'et al.' — period after al., no period after et (et is a complete Latin word). No italics, no comma between the first author's name and et al., though APA requires the comma after et al. before the year inside parentheses: (Smith et al., 2024). In running text: 'Smith et al. (2024) found...' with the period doing double duty.
Grammar follows the noun: 'Smith et al. (2024) found' — plural verb, because et al. means 'and others'. The special case is two authors with the same surname: APA requires initials every time (J. Smith, 2020; R. Smith, 2022) to keep them distinct. These mechanics are small, but they recur dozens of times per paper, which is why citation errors cluster here — ten instances of one wrong pattern read as systemic carelessness rather than one typo.
Three minutes to a clean citation
Edge-case citations punish hesitation, not ignorance: the student who spends twenty minutes googling a no-author format loses more time to doubt than the format ever costs. Decide the pattern once — title moves forward, organization counts as author, n.d. when no date exists anywhere — and apply it mechanically. Consistency across your list matters more to graders than perfect recall of manual arcana.
Automate what's mechanical. The citation generator below formats journal articles, books, chapters and websites in all three major styles, including the awkward cases on this page. Paste the metadata, copy the output, done — the minutes you save belong to analysis, which is where rubric points actually live. Cross-check in-text forms against the table above and the reference list is submission-ready.

Verify before submitting (APA 7):
- Author names inverted (Surname, Initials.) with an ampersand before the last author
- Article titles in sentence case; journal names in Title Case italics
- DOI shown as a live https://doi.org/ link (no 'DOI:' prefix)
- Edition and publisher location rules: editions in parentheses, no city since APA 7

Frequently asked questions
5 answered1How do you cite 3 authors in APA 7?
First author plus et al. from the first citation: (Smith, Jones & Ortiz, 2024) is wrong in APA 7 — write (Smith et al., 2024). In the reference list, all three appear in full. In-text et al. form applies to every citation of that work.
2How do you cite two authors in APA?
Both, every time: (Smith & Jones, 2024) parenthetically, or Smith and Jones (2024) in running text — ampersand in parentheses, the word and in prose. Never et al. with only two authors; both names appear in every in-text citation.
3How do you cite multiple authors in MLA 9?
Two authors: both names in full, connected by and — (Smith and Jones 12). Three or more: first author plus et al. — (Smith et al. 12). Note MLA uses no comma before the page number and never an ampersand in-text.
4When do you use et al. in APA 7?
With three or more authors, from the very first citation — APA 7 eliminated the 3-to-5-author first-citation exception that APA 6 used. The form is (Firstauthor et al., year). In the reference list, authors are never shortened with et al. unless there are 21+.
5What if two citations become identical when shortened?
Spell out enough authors to distinguish them: (Smith, Chen, et al., 2021) versus (Smith, Rivera, et al., 2021). Same-author-same-year pairs get letters instead: (Smith, 2024a), (Smith, 2024b), assigned by title alphabetization in the reference list.
